SIMONA DEACONESCU

short biography

An emerging Romanian choreographer and filmmaker, currently living and working in Bucharest. Simona’s work explores the future of the body, working across genres, (re)mixing the border between rational and irrational.

She was granted the danceWEB Scholarship in 2014 and was nominated as one of the Aerowaves Twenty18 Artists in 2017. In 2016 she received The National Center of Dance Bucharest Award for her contribution to the growth of Romanian contemporary dance. In 2018 she received the Loikka Award for excellence in the creation of dance film with her short “Sonder”.

In 2013 she founded Tangaj Collective, creating performances, installations and films. Her artistic research was supported by residencies offered by Gabriela Tudor Foundation and 4Culture in Bucharest, Battery Dance Studios in New York, Forum Dança in Lisbon and TeatrInGestAzione in Naples. In 2018 she will start a new project with a residency at La Briqueterie Paris (Val-de-Marne Choreographic Development Centre). Her live works and master classes have been presented in Romania, Austria, USA, Hungary, Bulgaria, Turkey, Italy, Lithuania and Chile, while her dance films have been selected in more than 40 festivals around the world.

Following her instinct to develop a dance film industry in her own country, in 2015, alongside film producer Anamaria Antoci, she founded Bucharest International Dance Film Festival.

We live in an era in which our belief system has become so dynamic and changeable. Communication has developed into a very complex apparatus that extends beyond human connection. Although this rises questions of ethics, it also leaves an immense space for exploration and discovery. I embrace the ambiguity and the mystery that dance brings to the art world. I like to create a reflexive world of the hiper-personal, a network in which experiences are transferred and intimate thoughts are the starting point for movement. If what we observe in not nature itself, but nature exposed to our way of questioning, dance has the power to make visible a world so subtle and invisible to the human eye, just like the world of the pristine ocean. In my dance the micro world takes over the macro world.
