DESCRIPTION
Zona Martiska is a journey into the unexplored architecture of the greenhouse of Castello de la Mandria, one hour away from Torino. Three dancers and one sonar robot guide the audience to explore the space, generating a constantly changing soundscape. Technology is an investigative tool in their service that gives life to sound and movement from simple gestures. The performers lead the audience through a hybrid choreography in a space that was a former breeding ground for superior female horses and an unfinished greenhouse project.
In Zona Martiska, a technological system developed ad hoc generates a new kind of interaction between music, architecture, and the human body. The system comprises a network of wearable devices and a sonar robot that measures different distances in space. Sensors collect real-time information about the building’s conditions and the movement of both performers and audience. These inputs are further translated into sound. Zona Martiska changes with every new performance, depending on how artists and visitors decide to explore the space, generating unique and different sound compositions.
Freely inspired by Andrej Tarkovskij’s film “Stalker”, Zona Martiska is a world in a bubble where reality and fiction mix while the body gets deconstructed in the architectural heritage. The space becomes resistant, a landscape of power unravels, while natural forces and human actions clash.
The Zone is a very complicated system of traps, and they’re all deadly. I don’t know what’s going on here in the absence of people, but the moment someone shows up, everything comes into motion… That’s the Zone. It may even seem capricious, but it is what we’ve made it with our condition. Everything that’s going on here depends not on the Zone, but on us!
“Stalker”, Andrej Tarkovskij
